Blackfeet/Native American Studies
MISSION
The Blackfeet/Native American Studies department is committed to enhancing the successful acquisition of tribal knowledge and academic learning of our students in all academic areas through the implementation of language, culture and heritage of the Blackfeet Tribe and other Montana Indian Tribal Groups as required by MCA 20-1-501, known as the Indian Education For All state law. We will also, in accordance with School Board Policies and Blackfeet Tribal Resolutions, integrate the Seven Essential Understandings of Montana Indian Groups, the Pikuni Code of Education, the Blackfeet Education Standards and Benchmarks and the State Standards and Benchmarks into our Indian Education For All District Action Plan.
OBJECTIVES AND GOALS
1. To promote language fluency, culture, heritage, and pride in self as Blackfeet students, along with the understanding and acceptance of other Montana Native cultures by non-Native students and staff.2. To increase overall academic success of Blackfeet and other Native students through language, history and cultural learning alongside required academic skills in reading, math and written language through the implementation of individual building action plans.3. To provide professional development and support to regular classroom Teachers (K-12) and district personnel.4. To increase parent /community involvement and participation in the learning of Native/Non-Native students along side BNAS staff and regular classroom teachers to insure student academic success.
BNAS goals and objectives will be met by providing adequate staffing, training and support that supplements and enriches the regular school program. Language, culture and heritage acquisition will focus on implementing the Seven Essential Understandings of Montana Indian Groups, the Blackfeet Education Standards &Benchmarks, and the Montana State Standards & Benchmarks, into the existing Browning Public School District K-12 Curriculum.
